Folder clutched in my right hand, I knocked with my left and entered Adrianâs office. He looked up from the paperwork scattered across his desk, glasses perched on the tip of his nose and motioned me forward. âShut the door behind you.â
I complied and approached his desk, handing him the folder before I took a seat in front of him. I gathered my hands in my lap and crossed my legs in wait as he opened the folder and scanned the contents.
Finally, he lowered it onto his desk and removed his glasses. âWould you like to explain what it was exactly that I walked in on earlier?â
Do I really have to? Itâs not like I can lie and whereâs the fun in telling the truth?
âHenry and I were having a disagreement, thatâs all.â
âWhat was the disagreement about?â
âI apparently do not work efficiently or quickly enough for Henryâs taste. He accused me of holding back information pertaining to this case and exhibiting attitude unbecoming to his liking.â
Adrian dropped his glasses onto his desk. âI will admit that the attitude displayed was unlike you and unfavorable.â He held up his hand when it looked like I was going to object. âHenry sometimes lacks sensitivity when it comes to job constraints when they differ from his own.â He leaned back in his chair. âI imagine the combination of your relationship with Johnny has affected his demeanor as well.â
âThatâs not my problem nor is that my responsibility. As I told you before when you addressed me with the issue of my relationship with Johnny, it has not and will not affect my job performance.â
âBut your job performance is affected though isnât it?â
âThatâs ridiculous.â I blurted out. âI had only just finished my autopsy when Johnny and Henry entered the morgue. I didnât have the proper time to-â
âThis case is familiar to you, is it not?â
I frowned and tried to lean casually back into the hard seat. âIâm not sure I follow you.â
Adrian lowered his gaze back to the open file and shifted forward to pull another file free from under it. âLilah informed me of your attitude earlier at the crime scene. She mentioned you seemed off-balance and distracted after seeing the victimâs body.â He opened the file in his hand. âYou are aware of the similarities between the Andy Walker case and that of your-â
âYes, I am aware.â
Adrian slid his glasses back onto his nose and looked up from the file with raised eyebrows. âDid you seek counseling for your loss?â
My hands had shifted to grip the cold arms of the chair. âIt happened a year before I graduated. I subjected myself to the required psych evaluation during the hiring process, and it was determined futile for me to do any sessions.â
âAnd if they were offered?â
âI naturally grieved for the loss of my brother as did the rest of my family, but I appreciate the inquiry. Thereâs no reason to believe the two crimes are related. My brotherâs killer was apprehended days after his body was found, and there was a signed confession.
